CLIMATE RESILIENCE
Adapting to a Changing Earth
The livelihoods of Samburu communities are highly vulnerable to climate variability. The region is among Kenya’s driest, with annual rainfall ranging between 200 and 500 mm, marked by unpredictable onset, intensity, and duration. These erratic patterns have increasingly resulted in prolonged droughts and flash floods, which degrade rangelands, reduce pasture availability, and diminish water resources, critically undermining livestock survival and productivity.
A community survey in Samburu reported that 69% of households cited scarcity of pasture as a key constraint, directly reducing grazing opportunities and pushing livestock to travel farther distances for forage.
Proven Adaptation Strategies
Rotational Grazing
We utilize traditional movement patterns combined with GIS mapping to allow rangelands to recover, ensuring consistent fodder during extended droughts.
Water Sovereignty
By rehabilitating indigenous 'silanga' water pans and installing solar-powered systems, we stabilize water access for over 500 pastoralist households.
Forest Guardians
We protect sacred groves and high-altitude forests that act as critical micro-climate buffers, reducing heat stress for livestock and humans alike.
